Corsets are quite expensive if you are buying a quality item from a proper place. Hence, it will break your heart if it gets damaged. To avoid instances of damage, there are several rules and regulations already mentioned by the experts floating in the form of blogs throughout the web.
A good quality corset is also known for its sturdy nature as it is meant for extreme waist training. But there can be instances when even after you have taken care of or you have bought a high-quality corset, it can get damaged. It is not always possible to replace the entire corset with a new one. While there are some cases where you can easily repair the corsets, there are some other times when it is not possible to do so.
Here are the options that you can have for repairing your damaged corset, if possible.
The Damage of Fabric
Though the fabric used for manufacturing the corset is quite sturdy and rigid, still there can be several times when it can get damaged.
● Tearing from the Stitches:
If the stitches have come out from the joints due to which the corset has got torn, this is a much easier task to handle. You must have mended many dresses in which the stitches may have come out, due to which the dress may have got damaged. What did you do at that time? You would have stitched the entire area once again as per the stitches that were there previously. You have to do the same thing here also. But the only thing that you need to take care of is the quality of the thread and the stitches' knots. Corsets are made to resist extreme stretching. Normally, the threads should not come out of a high-quality corset. But if it has come out somehow, you should find a high-quality thick thread so that it does not break in between. Also, you should provide double knots to ensure that the stitch stays.
● Tearing Somewhere Else:
What are you going to do is the corset fabric has torn from somewhere else apart from the joints? You may think of joining a piece of cloth at the backside of the tear, in the same way how you do in the case of other dresses. But it would help if you remembered that this is a corset. A slight change in the sizing can change a lot about the corset. It can get really hard to repair the corset without making changes in its size in such cases.
● Damage due to Bone:
Sometimes, the bone edge may also damage the fabric or the piping of the boning. If such a thing has happened, of course, you can do a patchwork to mend this issue. If the tear has happened on the piping, and you join a piece of cloth to cover it up, it will not disturb the corset's sizing.
The Damage of Fabric
Busk Damage
The second most important thing that you should know to handle bone damage. Usually, the steel bones are quite rigid and should not break. At most, they should bend too much. But if you have been washing the corset too much, the steel bone may have got rust, which can also lead to breakage.
So, what should you do in such a case?
- Take out the Bone that has damaged the corset's piping by unstitching the piping from one side.
- Now measure the Bone properly that should comprise the length and the diameter of the Bone.
- Get in touch with a dealer that offers you corset items such as bones and ask for the steel bone by offering the exact sizes.
- As you get the Bone, insert this new Bone in the same piping and stitch the sides you have unstitched before.
The busks can get damaged due to the two most common reasons. One is that if you have had an accident with the corset on. The second is that if you have been wearing a much smaller corset in size than what you actually should be wearing.
If a single busk has got damaged or has come out, you can fix it using different tools such as a rivet setter.
But if the entire chain of busks has come out, it can be a difficult task. Even if you have used a river setter to fix the entire chain, you can see marks that may have appeared on the corset's fabric.
Earlier, when women knew the art of manufacturing corsets at home, they easily repaired the corsets. But now, when women buy corsets, repairing all the damages can get difficult. In such a case, you can either take professional help to repair the corset or can entirely get a new corset home.
