Why Should You Not Wash a Corset in Your Machine?

Author Maxim Tourou / Category Architecture / Published: Apr-05-2018

Normally, you should not wash your corset as often as you wash your clothes. But somehow, if you need to get your corset cleaned, you should always give it away to a dry cleaning agent for the purpose.

Again there can be many times when you may not have a reliable dry cleaner nearby. It can also be some other reasons too because you may not wish to give out your corset to the dry cleaners. In such a case, one of the most ideal ways is to clean the corset at home. The washing machine is the most obvious method that you might look towards cleaning your corset now.

But is it actually a great idea to wash your corset in your washing machine?

Here are some of the possible explanations for it.

The Shrinkage of the Fabric:

Corsets are manufactured by stretching the fabric and tightly attaching it to the steel bones, and stitching it carefully. When the corset is soaked in the water for a longer time in the washing machine, it may lead the corset's fabric to shrink. Thus, the corset will reach the same shape in which you found it when it was new. So, all your efforts and time of seasoning, the corset will go in vain. Again, you will have to repeat seasoning the corset procedure to wear it correctly for your regular waist training.

Rusting of the Steel Bones:

One of the major reasons for not washing the corset in the washing machine is that the water can cause rusting to the steel bones. When you are washing the corset in a washing machine, the corset is completely getting immersed in the machine's water. Now, when the steel bones are the corset is coming in direct contact with the water, there are high chances of the bones getting rust. Rusted steel bones not only have the tendency to break soon as they get too weak, but also they can damage the fabric of the corset.

Bending of the Steel Bones:

The water may lead the steel bones to rust. The twisting and twirling in the washing machine will also lead many steel bones to bend in the wrong way. Thus, when you finally take the corset out of the machine and dry it up, you may notice an irregular shape developed in the corset. This may have happened as the corset's steel bones may have got bent due to washing of the corset in the washing machine.

Damage to the Stitches:

While manufacturing the corsets, the experts provide strong stitches to the edges. The corset can remain strong and intact when you are tightening the laces extremely hard. Though these stitches may sustain the tight lacing, it may not sustain other pressures such as the pressure when the corset is rigorously getting whirled in the washing machine. Of course, suppose you have a fashion corset that is not usually of high-quality. In that case, you may see the stitches coming out the very first time when you have washed them in the washing machine. But even if it is a high-quality corset, there are high chances that washing in the machine can weaken the corset's stitches.

Damage to the Corset:

Have you bought a beautiful sequin lacing corset that you can wear over your dress on some special occasions? It must have surely broken your heart when you might have spilled wine or something else on it by mistake. But does not that mean you can conveniently throw the corset in the washing machine as soon as you return home?

The washing machine will damage the lacing and the sequin frills because of which you have bought the corset. So, you might end up losing your most beautiful corset because of your washing machine.

Damage to the Washing Machine:

Read the instructions on the washing machine. You will see the point that you should remove all the accessories and metal items before putting the clothes in the machine. This is because the metal items can hurt the walls of the machine and can damage the machine. So, the steel bones in the corsets can also damage the machine.

Thus, it is not a very great idea to wash your corset in a washing machine. There are many other several ways that you can try out at home to clean your corset. You can try out spray cleaning by mixing two equal amounts of water and vodka to return the freshness to the corset. You can try out other options such as spot cleaning and others so that you can clean up the dirt without damaging the corset. Drying out the corset in the open air or under the sun is the next step that you should forget after cleaning the corset.
